Stop Torture
Ongoing Campaign
Torture is banned under International law, but many countries - the United States included - often torture people. And many of these people are completely innocent, have never been charged, been told what their charges are, or have seen a court of law. Don't think it's that bad? American torture systems have frequently engaged in rectal feedings, forced sleep deprivation, and wrapping naked prisoners in Mylar tape and abusing them. We must demand accountability for such actions.
Write For Rights
November Campaign (Recurring)
AI's biggest campaign: ten stories of human rights abuses, several weeks of intensive writing, many lives bettered or saved. Last year, one of those stories was that of Raif Badawi, a father of three and Saudi Arabian political blogger who was sentenced to 10 years in prison and one thousand lashes to be given 50 lashes at a time, once a week for 20 weeks. His crime? BLOGGING. His first 50 lashes were given January 9th, 2015. Since then, his remaining lashes have been delayed every single Friday. Though he is still imprisoned, Amnesty International's fervent letter writing campaigns, call-ins to Saudi Arabian Embassies, and peaceful protests have helped postpone Raif's floggings for over 8 months. This year, we hope to continue writing for Raif and for many others that have had their most basic human rights abused.
